Magical Hawk run ends

PC's Drew Haberkorn takes a shot Friday night at the Herscher Sectional.

Prairie Central ends the varsity basketball season at 31-3 after falling to Pontiac 53-48 in the Herscher Sectional championship Friday night.

Pontiac headed into halftime with a 30-25 lead. The second half scoring was even but the county rival Indians, who the Hawks met for the third time this season, were able to hold off PC. The Hawks even took a couple of leads in the second half and were up 47-46 at one point.

Drew Haberkorn led the Hawk scoring with 15 points and other scorers included Drew Fehr, Tyler Curl, Dylan Bazzell, Camden Palmore and Gage Steidinger. Pontiac was led by Rylie Weber who scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half. Michael Kuska had 13.

“I’m very proud of our team,” PC head coach Darin Bazzell said Friday night. “I’ve certainly been blessed to coach this group.”

PC’s last loss was Jan. 21 to Teutopolis the day after beating Pontiac in Fairbury. Pontiac now heads to the Elite 8 and will play Central Catholic in the Springfield Supersectional Monday night.

One of the most successful seasons in program history for Prairie Central brought Hawk basketball back to a place it once was with full gymnasiums and excitement surrounding the team.

Fairbury News was there to cover the action and we plan to do it again next year. Our broadcast team Friday night included Marc Strauss and Mike Norris.
