JH softball defeats Ottawa

Jim Meister visits with members of the PCJH softball team live on Fairbury News Thursday.

The Prairie Central Junior High softball team won over Ottawa in a regional game played at Fairbury Thursday afternoon 10-0.

The Hawks now play in the regional championship this Saturday at 11 a.m. against the winner of the Morris vs. Peru Parkside game. The winner of that game was not immediately known early Thursday evening.

“If you’re looking for something to do on a Saturday, come on out and root for your Prairie Central Junior High Hawks,” said Ben Klekamp, PCJH athletic director/dean of students.

There is no sectional or state series for the junior high this year so Saturday will be the last game.

“We’ve still got the same teams that we would be playing in our regional here,” added Klekamp.

Prairie Central was expecting to play Pontiac but ended up playing Ottawa since they upset Pontiac in the first round. Assistant coach Jim Meister felt the Hawks played really well on Thursday.

“We felt that if we came out and played our game, that we should be able to win but it turned out we were able to get it done in five innings,” he said.

Since Meister had not coached any of the girls in the summertime heading into this year, he was unprepared for what they could bring to the table.

“Right off the bat, I could tell the seventh graders and eighth graders we have really do a good job hitting the ball,” Meister observed. “We put a lot of pressure on the defense.”

The Junior High softball team is coached by Stephanie McClure.

The Junior High baseball team finished their season at Pontiac on Monday.
