Keith Zimmerman was a big part of Dave’s Supermarket for 50 years and is retiring as the store marks its 74th anniversary with a special week ahead.
Customers have interacted with Zimmerman in the meat department for many years as he could be spotted with a white coat answering questions or simply passing along a friendly greeting with a smile.
“I just had a lot of wonderful experiences working with not only employees but with the customers,” Zimmerman told Fairbury News. “It’s really the relationships I’ve developed over the years that are very special.”
A retirement open house to mark 50 years of service was held at the Dave’s Third Street Deli in Zimmerman’s honor Friday.
He was right out of high school when he started working with Mark Steffen at the trimming table, eventually working his way up the ladder to the position he is retiring from.
Zimmerman will not be away completely, as you can possibly spot him helping out when needed.
“I’m sure I’ll get called back to help out which I’d be willing to do.”
In retirement, Zimmerman looks forward to spending time with grandkids, taking some trips and working on getting a list of tasks accomplished.
“There’ll be things to do,” he admits.
A display in the deli broke down Zimmerman’s 50-year career describing 600 months, 2,600 weeks, 18,250 days, 130,000 hours and 7,800,000 minutes. In fact, Zimmerman has been around for 68 percent of Dave’s Supermarket existence, according to a social media post from the store.
“Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to our team,” said a sign which also featured photographs from throughout the years.
It is a busy week for the store as the annual Dave’s Customer Appreciation Pig-Out is set for this coming Tuesday (June 4) from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with live music, food and family fun held rain or shine.
