Wilson is new Rotary president

Outgoing president Joan Smeltzer presents new president Rick Wilson with a special pin on Tuesday.

There has been a change at the top for the Fairbury Rotary Club.

Rick Wilson presided over his first meeting Tuesday as the new president for 2020-2021. He looks forward to what the club can do in the year ahead and considers the organization an important part of the community.

“We have a great group with some great people,” Wilson said after the meeting.

Rotary is an international organization helping others around the world with initiatives such as clean drinking water and wellness. It also benefits local communities such as Fairbury.

Outgoing president Joan Smeltzer was glad to serve, even in a year which turned out to be a bit unusual and challenging at times.

“It was an honor to serve as president during this year,” Smeltzer said. “Fairbury Rotarians are people of service and they do believe in service before self. They are people of action.”

Anyone wanting to know more about the club or what it is about should speak with a local Rotarian.

School update given

Prairie Central Superintendent Paula Crane gave an update on the district during Tuesday’s meeting. She is hopeful students will be able to return to in-person learning at least for the start of the year so they can be properly trained for remote learning if it is needed.

“We want to make sure kids are okay and getting ready for the next step,” Crane explained.

Attendance will be required for remote learning and the focus will be on consistency.

“There has to be constant communication.”

The district does have CARES act money it will use to buy technology and covers to keep that technology protected. Student temperatures will be taken and no visitors will be allowed in the school.

“We’ve been trying to think through every scenario,” Crane added.
