One of the elite racing events in the country is here.
It is Prairie Dirt Classic weekend at Fairbury Speedway with thousands of visitors in town through Sunday.
“People continue to talk about what Fairbury has,” said Matt Curl, owner and promoter of Fairbury Speedway.
Curl and his crew are anticipating around 7,500 people on Saturday night for the premier event. The track sees more some years but they have been stable in the 7,400 to 7,500 range in recent years.
“Now we feel like we have a really good nucleus,” adds Curl.
Race fans bring their campers and pocket books to the community, supporting this area by spending money here. Camper bags are handed out to those with spots.
“We invest a lot of money into the grounds and we have a great partnership with the Fairbury Fair,” Curl notes.
Shuttles are available to take people around town as more than 40 states are represented. Even a few international visitors come to Fairbury.
“It’s really grown into something special.”
The “One for the Road” race took place Wednesday evening to open the week’s activities and Thursday is the Shriner’s golf outing followed by the Bank of Pontiac pork chop meal and auction. Racing happens again Friday and Saturday nights at the track.
Curl hopes fans realize Fairbury is the destination to be at for a long time to come.
“We never let them go home disappointed.”
