Audit, street work discussed
A recent audit for the City of Fairbury was described as being “very positive.”
Renee Brucker of MCK CPAs and Advisors presented the 2025-2026 audit findings to the Fairbury City Council Wednesday evening, which the group later approved.
A clean opinion was issued on the financial statements. Total liabilities decreased due to payments made on debt while not incurring any new debt. Revenues in the library fund were down due to decreased donations while the water and sewer funds had no big swings in revenues or expenses.
“Revenues continue to outpace expenses in the water fund,” Brucker explained.
For the sewer fund, expenses outweigh the revenues, which has been consistent for the past few years.
“The cash position for both the water and sewer fund is still in good shape,” added Brucker.
None of the funds have a deficit balance and MCK has assisted the city in preparing its annual financial report which is submitted to the Illinois Comptroller.
Also during Wednesday’s regular Fairbury City Council meeting, the group learned the Main Street project has started. Curb work is occurring first and will be followed by resurfacing.
“They should move along fairly quickly,” stated City Superintendent Brett Ashburn.
Ashburn hopes the street is striped by the end of the year. He said the company is aware of the upcoming Prairie Central homecoming parade in early October.
Ashburn also announced an annexation hearing is planned prior to the next council meeting for property Fairview Haven would like to annex into town.
Council members approved a quote from Petersen Chevrolet for a new water department truck.
Replacement of the wastewater department flowmeter was authorized. This is used to take readings and is past its time, according to Ashburn.
Amendments were approved to Chapter 6 of the city ordinances on refuse and garbage as pricing needs to be adjusted for residential dumpsters, moving from $13 to $21 a ton.
Ashburn said the current landfill rate is not covering expenses.
Quotes for tree removal were approved for PDK Tree Service as the city requests assistance in an alley near Third and Maple in an area referred to as “Hidden Acres.”
Prairie Central’s request for the Oct. 2 homecoming parade was granted for the Student Senate to use city streets. This is for 2:30 p.m. continuing for one half hour.
Consent agenda items were approved including Sept. 2 meeting minutes, voucher invoice register listing the bills, treasurer’s cash report, check register and overtime report.
