Obituary: Oakland




Glen Oakland, 102, of Fairbury, passed away at 6:48pm, August 4, 2020, at Heritage Heath, El Paso.


Cremation has been accorded. Inurnment will take place privately at Evergreen Cemetery, Morris. A celebration of life will take place at a later date.


Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Fairbury is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.


Glen was born April 7, 1918, in Newark, the son of Philip and Myrtle Rich Oakland.

He married Rita O. Reader on February 22, 1944, in New York City, NY. She died October 24, 2010.


Surviving are his two sons, Jim (Blanche) Oakland of Payson, AZ and Dennis (Debbie) Oakland of Fairbury; grandchildren, Jennifer (Don) Smith, Heather Oakland-Boothe, Melissa (Aaron) Grant, and Allison (CJ) Kaisner; 10 great-grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Wesley Glen Oakland; two grandsons, Joshua Glen and James Glen; two brothers and one sister.


Glen was a veteran of the United States Navy, where he served as a deep-sea diver during WWII.


After the war Glen came home and painted houses. Glen loved the painting business and became the assistant manager at the Smith-Alsop Paint Store in LaSalle. He later became the manager of the Smith-Alsop Paint Store in Kankakee for 23 years. After retiring Glen still enjoyed painting and could be found painting houses into his eighties.
