Prairie Central’s award-winning FFA program and ag department now has extra space to prepare students for the future.
The new agriculture addition to Prairie Central High School was celebrated with a public open house Wednesday evening.
“It is very exciting and great to have the project finished,” admits Becky Freed, one of the PCHS ag teachers.
The facility, which was over two years in the making, features a new ag classroom, space specifically for small engines classes and a classroom for animal, vet and meat science. Students will even have a chance to process and make their own sausage recipes.
“We also have a very large ag mechanics shop that we are using for our Ag 4 class tractor restoration and a large construction shop,” Freed explained.
Freed feels blessed the department is supported by the administration, school board and community members.
While the older ag shop is still used for welding and other purposes, the new space eliminates having three classes in the shop at the same time.
“This allows us to really spread out and kind of develop our projects more.”
While visionary leaders in the district helped make the addition happen, Freed notes the community jumped on board with ideas on careers the school needs to prepare students for.
Those visiting Wednesday’s two-hour open house were treated to Kilgus Farmstead ice cream as they walked through the rooms. Ag faculty, students and other staff members were on hand to show visitors around.
It is a busy time for the Prairie Central FFA chapter as seven teams will head to nationals this fall. The new space is being well utilized as teams prepare for competition pretty much every day.
