A Stanley Drive resident appeared before members of the Fairbury City Council Wednesday evening, requesting signage for a lower speed limit.
The resident was not aware of any signage in the area since the subdivision has been in existence. Concerns were raised since kids play near there and often run in and out of the street since it is a dead-end.
Street Superintendent Martin Steidinger noted any street with a speed limit not posted is 30 miles per hour in Fairbury. Mayor David Slagel said an ordinance would be needed to change a speed limit.
“We’ll take a look at it and see what signage we can add out there,” replied City Superintendent Brett Ashburn.
Police Chief Robert McCormick reported he has two surplus vehicles and was considering going to auction rather than a sealed bid.
Ashburn revealed the city received a compliance review from the Illinois Department of Transportation for Motor Fuel Tax funds.
“We are in good standing with MFT,” explained Ashburn.
Under new business, the council authorized the renewal of city insurance with IMLRMA. Alderman Jon Kinate made a motion to go with the lower rate option. According to Ashburn, the city normally just does a one-time payment but this time there is an option that is a “roll of the dice.”
“I like the idea of going with the lower rate and taking a risk,” stated Mayor Slagel.
In another matter, city leaders approved purchasing coats for public works employees. The cost is around $175 per coat, depending on size, with the total cost approximately $2100. These are for everyone in public works. Alderman Bill Schmidgall made the motion to approve the coats.
The consent agenda was approved, which included Oct. 4 and 18 meeting minutes, voucher invoice register, treasurer’s cash report, check register and overtime report.
The Fairbury City Council also:
-Granted a request from IHR to host the Overdose and Recovery Awareness 5K Race at Marsh Park.
