Golf carts can now be operated on any street in Fairbury within the city limits except on Route 24.
The Fairbury City Council this week removed a line in the golf cart ordinance that prohibited operation on First or Seventh streets. Golf carts are still not allowed on Route 24 and the county road south of the race track down to Kilgus Dairy.
During the Public Comment section of Wednesday’s meeting, a citizen inquired about the completion date for the highway construction work. Brett Ashburn, City Superintendent, reported that the work is estimated to be completed by the second week of September.
Construction is supposed to be paused during the Prairie Dirt Classic event at Fairbury Speedway. Mayor David Slagel reported the plan is to resurface Route 24 from the County Line Road west of town to Tenth Street in Fairbury.
Slagel said the city had received a request from Fairview Haven to provide financial assistance with the utilities required for their new 24-unit expansion project, now under construction. The request was for a maximum of $294,000.
According to the mayor, the city has provided an average of $160,000 to similar recent projects. The council will hold a special session immediately preceding the next regular meeting to discuss this request further.
Ashburn noted that the Second Annual Bellyflop Contest will be held at the swimming pool during the PDC week. Flyers have been printed and will be distributed to attendees at the races. The pool lifeguards will be the judges of the contest.
Council members voted not to spend $23,500 on additional cameras for the city dump area on west Locust Street and the fire station. The group approved $11,000 for the installation of automatic door locks in the restrooms of North Park and Marsh Park.
The budget for fiscal year 2025-2026 was approved along with a request from United Way to hold a fundraising lunch in Sunken Park July 21 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
Motor fuel work for 2025-2026 was granted to the low bidder, Gray's Material Service.
