There was no need for kids in the Prairie Central School District to sing about Old MacDonald’s farm on Wednesday because they actually got to experience it.
Animals, tractors and kids activities were all part of “FFA Day” on the Dominy Library lawn and Dave’s Supermarket east parking lot.
Third grader Easton Petrovich, from Prairie Central Elementary, enjoyed the petting zoo and, of course, the freezer pops courtesy of Dave’s.
“I have chickens at my house and not too long ago we went on a field trip to Kilgus Dairy but besides that, I’m usually not around these animals,” Petrovich admitted.
The library was able to host the event due to construction taking place on the ag addition at Prairie Central High School which prevented the FFA from holding its normal petting zoo earlier in the year.
“It’s just such an honor to bring stuff back here on the lawn and have it open to the public,” said Lillian Rathbun, outreach coordinator for Dominy Library.
Students ranging in age from preschool through fourth grade were enjoying the activities. Even parents, grandparents and other family members got to see the action.
Prairie Central FFA members manned the stations and taught kids about ag along the way.
“We have multiple animals, tractors and games for the kids – preschool all the way through fourth grade along with daycares and it’s open to the public,” explained Hannah Miller, PC FFA vice president.
Miller and her brothers supplied a tractor and wagon along with two pigs and two sheep.
“This is one big last event,” said Kyrsten Atkins, PC FFA secretary. “I have been floating around from station to station showing them what it’s all about.”
Atkins has enjoyed her time in FFA which has been a big part of her life over the last four years, so she is sad to see it all come to an end.
Luke Ifft ran the PTO station, showing children farm safety and the basics of PTO’s on equipment. Ifft felt the young students asked plenty of questions and were good listeners.
“Today, I brought in a 765 Challenger two-track tractor,” said Ifft.
Those attending also had the chance to purchase a refreshing lemonade shake-up from Dave’s.
“I think it was very successful and thank goodness we had a break in the weather,” added Rathbun. “We are very fortunate.”
The event was originally planned for Tuesday but was pushed back a day due to the rainy weather. It was a good call as Wednesday’s weather was nearly perfect as the sun came out and temperatures climbed into the lower 70s.
