E-bike discussion continues

The recent increase in the number of e-bikes in Fairbury generated quite a bit of discussion during Wednesday’s Fairbury City Council meeting.

Alderman Bruce Weber reported that he had several citizens contact him expressing their concern about the safety of e-bikes on public streets and walking trails. City Attorney Matt Schrock will investigate recent changes to the law regarding e-bikes and report his findings to the City Council.

Superintendent Brett Ashburn reported that bids have been sent out to resurface Locust Street. Locust will be resurfaced from First to Fifth Street later this summer. The completion date in the bid documents is October 1, 2026. So far, no contractor has stated that they cannot meet this target completion date.

Streets Superintendent Lonnie Rhoads reported that some repairs to the walking trail near the Apostolic Christian Church were recently completed.

Alderman Steve Endres expressed thanks to SELCAS, the Fairbury Fire Department, and the Fairbury Police Department regarding their prompt response to a safety alarm incident at his home recently.

Council members approved a $ 1-per-month increase in garbage service for Fairbury residents. They also approved the purchase of additional rescue tools for the Fire Department. The cost of these rescue tools will be reimbursed to the City by using grants.

In other business, city leaders approved the purchase of six new trash cans for the downtown area. An appropriation ordinance was authorized for fiscal year 2026-2027.
