Court resurfacing approved

The North Park basketball court is shown this week.

The Fairbury City Council has approved resurfacing the basketball court at North Park.

Midwest Sport Surfaces, LLC will do the work which is $2,500 for power washing, surface leveling and crack repair and $8,500 for color coating of the approximately 7,000 square feet of surface and line painting. The company uses Laykold ColorFlex acrylics which are more elastic than other products available.

“It needs to be redone,” said City Superintendent Brett Ashburn.

This work will be done in conjunction with what is already planned from Dr. Joe Costa and the Prairielands Foundation for the new pickleball courts.

“The rest of it is going to be done by donation,” Mayor David Slagel explained.

Street Superintendent Martin Steidinger noted the basketball court’s asphalt surface has been there for several years but the tennis courts were done more recently.

Also during Wednesday’s meeting held online via Zoom, Alderman Bill Schmidgall thanked the street department for clearing limbs from the recent ice storm saying workers did a great job. Steidinger said his department put in plenty of hours over the weekend.

The group approved a request to purchase a tool box for the street department from Addis Auto Parts. Steidinger came across a less expensive tool box with a few scratches that could be used but Alderman Charles Hoselton suggested buying from Addis since they are local and pay taxes in the community.

Council members decided to keep meeting remotely until everyone feels comfortable going back to the in-person meetings at City Hall.

In other matters, the Fairbury City Council:

-Paid annual dues to the Fairbury Area Chamber of Commerce in the amount of $650 for the 2021 calendar year.

-Approved the consent agenda which included Dec. 16 minutes, voucher invoice register and overtime report.

-Shared a thank-you from Firefighter Alan Walter for the city’s Christmas gift.
