Fairbury firefighters were dispatched to the 400 block of south Fourth Street just before 3 p.m. for a contractor who struck a gas line Tuesday afternoon.
Nicor was notified since it was determined there was an active gas leak. Air quality monitoring in nearby structures and sewer manholes in the area revealed dangerous amounts of natural gas, according to officials.
Fairbury Assistant Fire Chief Josh Hoselton said Casey’s General Store was evacuated and other nearby homes which were impacted were vacant. The fire department remained on scene until 6:30 p.m. for ventilation efforts after Nicor stopped the leak.
No one was injured, although SECLAS ambulance personnel were requested to check out four individuals and stand by for precautionary measures.
