Board hears facilities report

The facilities study report prepared by BLDD Architects and the “PACT” Committee was presented to members of the Prairie Central Board of Education during a special meeting Tuesday night in Fairbury.

The document suggests the board consider adopting a long-range facility master plan which results in a centralized PK-5 campus in Fairbury and the creation of a 6-8 middle school at Prairie Central Junior High.

“As a first step, the BOE should consider options to begin implementation of this plan via a no-tax rate change Phase 1 project via referendum on the November 5, 2024 ballot,” the report states.

When it comes to a potential centralized elementary, the report says a new PK-3/4/5 building should be considered at a location other than PC Elementary.

“Currently discussions reviewed property north of PC High School, but others could be considered and may gain additional support for a new facility with the secondary benefit of not using the PC Elem site in Fairbury,” the document said.

The “key findings” section of the document shows support across all scenarios for a 6-8 grade alignment at the Junior High and states the creation of PK-5 centers at Chenoa and Chatsworth “is not viable.”

During Tuesday’s presentation to the school board, Damien Schlitt from BLDD explained this has been a 6 to 7-month process so far with about 1100 people attending four meetings.

Rob Wright reviewed survey results with 781 total completed surveys online and on paper. For option 1 which includes a $90.8 million bond proposal for a new PK-5 center, more favored than opposed the idea. For option 2 which is a $63.3 million bond proposal for PK-3 grade centers at Chenoa and Chatsworth, more opposed.

More detailed information can be viewed in the report document which can be found from the district’s website at:

Prairie Central School Board President John Wilken thanked the PACT Committee and the professionals involved with the process.

Another special board meeting is set for Thursday evening (June 27) at 7 p.m. with several other meetings planned after that to continue discussions on the future of facilities.
