A record-setting 1,200 people were served Saturday morning during the annual Breakfast on the Farm held at Kilgus Farmstead.
The event from the Livingston County Farm Bureau Young Leaders keeps growing and gets families out to the farm.
“We maybe served 200 people that first year,” recalled Matt Kilgus.
Whether it is looking at livestock or examining farm equipment, the breakfast allows visitors to experience farm life on a Saturday morning in June, which happens to be Dairy Month.
“We are really thankful that the Kilguses host this event for us,” said Brad Schmidgall, Livingston County Farm Bureau president. “It’s a great opportunity to educate the public.”
The tradition has expanded way beyond Fairbury and Livingston County.
“I was talking to a gentleman and his son earlier from Plainfield,” notes Schmidgall.
The dollar breakfast is also known as a “farmer’s share breakfast” since it represents the small portion that goes back to the farmer for the meal.
“It’s been very busy. We’ve got a bunch of our Young Leaders and even some board members helping out,” said Kaity Carroll with LCFB Young Leaders.
The Kilgus Farmstead building expansion was on full display during the breakfast. The new store area opened at the end of May. The building includes an expanded bottling area, new cooler and freezer, dry storage and a covered dock area to the north.
“We are happy with the outcome,” added Kilgus.
