Fairbury City Council members Wednesday night approved a supplemental appropriation ordinance for the fiscal year ending April 30.

“It was basically some purchases that came up through the year that we hadn’t had money appropriated for specifically, so we had to adjust the appropriation to allow for the spending of that money,” explained Mayor David Slagel.

May 1 will mark the new fiscal year for the city and the council is expected to approve the new budget later this month. Slagel said the budget is mostly done, but has to be finalized and put on the agenda for a vote.

Also during the regular Fairbury City Council meeting, the group approved a request from CARE Charity to host a fall fling event at North Park on September 19 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A street closure request was authorized for the Dominy Library and Dave’s Supermarket FFA Day on May 1 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This is for Walnut Street in front of the library.

Rehabilitation of wells 5 and 7 at the Water Treatment Plant was approved for Layne Christensen Co. Water Superintendent Mike Mellott reported both wells are starting to plug up at the screen.

“To take care of that, we have to have a company come in,” he said. “Well 5 is one of our bigger pumping wells so we’ll need that this summer.”

An abatement of bonds was approved for the fire station. This gets everything done at once, according to City Treasurer Dale Diller.

The council voted to purchase mulch for the parks. Alderman Jon Kinate made the motion while Alderman Jerry Hoffman seconded.

Replacing PLC at the Wastewater Treatment Plant was another agenda item. Sewer Superintendent Bruce Pride admitted this has gone up in price.

Consent agenda items were approved, which included March 18 meeting minutes, voucher invoice register listing the bills, treasurer’s cash report, check register and overtime report.

City Clerk Alex Reis reminded everyone of the Saturday, April 4 Easter Egg Hunt starting at 10 a.m. in North Park.

“We’ve got a lot of good stuff from our sponsors,” Reis said.
