Storm accompanies new year

Tree branches are shown at a home along Seventh Street Saturday morning.

An unwelcome visitor showed up to ring in the new year.

The Jan. 1 ice storm impacted Fairbury and the surrounding area all day Friday and into the night with downed limbs and power lines along with slick roads. Scattered power outages were reported, especially in the rural areas as trees snapped and utility crews were dispatched.

Side roads were still slick during the day Saturday but many of the major routes were cleared. The National Weather Service had issued an ice storm warning for Livingston and several other counties Friday for a 12-hour period. To make things even worse, the winds picked up mid-morning after freezing rain had already started sticking to surfaces.

A line was down on First Street Saturday prompting the city to place barricades here.
