The smell of charcoal, sound of generators and campers everywhere – it must be Prairie Dirt Classic weekend in Fairbury.
Race fans from all over have converged on our small town for a weekend of racing at the Fairbury Speedway and everything that goes with it such as live music, golf, dining and shopping.
“I love it here,” said Scott Knauff from Pennsylvania who set up camp in the ball fields of Prairie Central Elementary. “It’s a nice experience with a lot of camping here and fun parties afterwards.”
Knauff admits the black dirt at Fairbury is a big draw since there is mainly red clay where he comes from.
Kevin Korte from Highland, Illinois feels the Fairbury Speedway is the best facility in the state.
“Highland has their own track but it doesn’t hold a candle to this.”
Korte has attended races in Ohio, Missouri and Florida.
“They put a pretty good show on,” said Jacober, also of Highland.
Woody, of Woody & Bubba’s BBQ fame, was busy operating a golf cart shutting across First Street Friday morning. He met many people during his time on the cart and his family was helping out. In fact, they have seen people from Australia and the Netherlands in town.
“They’re coming from all over for this place,” said Woody. “They say it’s the best track in the country.”
Prairie Dirt Classic Showdown Night is Friday with the showdown features from the World of Outlaws Late Model Series $5,000 to win. Saturday is the 34th annual Prairie Dirt Classic $50,000 to win, 100 laps presented by Bank of Pontiac and Illinois State Rifle Association.
