New officers sworn-in

New police officers were sworn-in during Wednesday’s regular meeting of the Fairbury City Council.
The three officers are Johnannes Steber, Ethan Murray and Richard Longstreth.
Fairbury Police Chief Chris Edwards said they are at full staff now with the hires.
The chief also revealed he was accepted into an orientation course for police chiefs at Peoria, which is an intensive leadership program.
“I’ll be over there in a couple of weeks,” Edwards said.
City Superintendent Brett Ashburn announced plans for an annexation hearing prior to the Sept. 16 council meeting for the Traub property near Gutwein Door along Route 24.
Attorney Matt Schrock gave an update on e-bikes, noting that Illinois passed a law in August. He suggested the city modify its ordinance to prevent e-bikes on the sidewalk.
“A lot of people are using them but they still have to follow traffic laws either way,” noted Schrock.
Alderman James Tipton hopes the word spreads about rules for the bikes.
“I think it needs to be on Facebook numerous times.”
Council members approved appointments of Josh Kafer and John Slagel to the Zoning Board of Appeals and Matt Davis as chairman of the board.
A street closure request was authorized for the upcoming family movie night on Locust Street between Fourth and Fifth streets on Sept. 11. This includes the area in front of Catton’s Creamery and Gig’s Place.
Purchasing a new printer copier for the police department was approved. The chief feels it is more cost efficient to do a purchase rather than a lease. It was suggested to go with a laser printer.
“Our print usage has gone up,” said Edwards.
The consideration of quotes to purchase a new Water Department truck was tabled.
Consent agenda items approved included Aug. 26 minutes, voucher invoice register listing the bills, treasurer’s cash report, check register and overtime report.
