A quote has been approved by the Fairbury City Council to repair the bulk water service area at the city’s water treatment plant.

Water Superintendent Mike Mellott recommended going with galvanized material because of its strength.

“Both companies are quoting the same material,” Mellott explained.

Mellott suggested the bulk water fill be shut down during winter or limited to the first shift to ensure it gets drained. While this doesn’t normally get much use in the winter, many farmers have been getting water for their wells due to dry conditions.

The council decided to go with a bid from Steidinger Brothers which was cheaper than the other option, according to the mayor.

In other business at Wednesday’s regular Fairbury City Council meeting, a liquor application was approved for Wells on Main Guest House & Gatherings, LLC. This came after an amendment was authorized for Chapter 8 Section .07 of the Municipal Code Book. The issues were discussed at the previous meeting but officially approved at this one.

A resolution was approved authorizing disposal of unclaimed motor vehicles. City council members said the police chief has been doing a good job of getting rid of vehicles as only a few remain.

The consent agenda was approved, including February 18 meeting minutes, voucher invoice register and overtime report.

Sewer Superintendent Bruce Pride reported the new camera van is working well. It was parked outside of City Hall for the council to see. City Superintendent Brett Ashburn announced he will be attending a flood plain management event.

Mayor Slagel relayed to the council that rates at the landfill have increased as of February.

“Apparently, there was some sort of 25-year contract that expired,” he said.
