Council talks streets

Members of the Fairbury City Council heard street maintenance plans at Wednesday’s regular meeting.

Joe Russow of Farnsworth Group outlined the work which will utilize Motor Fuel Tax funds from May 1, 2019 to April 30, 2020. The projects are not anticipated to be as major as last year’s renovation of the parking lot near Dave’s Supermarket and work on First Street.

“Ten of the 11 items are standard items we do every year,” Russow explained.

Work will entail spray patching streets and seal coating. The estimated cost for construction and engineering is $133,355.69. The only major difference this year is higher unit prices for the oil used.

“We’ll just have to see how those numbers come in,” added Russow.

The council approved the Resolution for Maintenance under the Illinois Highway Code for the purpose of maintaining streets in the amount of $147,000 from MFT funds.

In a separate matter, Adam Dontz from the Greater Livingston County Economic Development Council updated city leaders on the GLCEDC. The group’s membership includes those both in the private and public sectors. Dontz said the county has appropriated economic development funds for the next several years.

“We have taken a real pro-active role in working with the schools,” Dontz said.

The GLCEDC is trying to help better prepare graduates for jobs in the area by working with the Livingston Area Career Center, Prairie Central, Pontiac District 429 and Woodland. The economic council approved $105,000 for Prairie Central to work with businesses on curriculum improvements.

Dontz is seeking another year of support from the Fairbury City Council but an action item was not listed on the agenda, so the group will consider the request at the next meeting.

Also at Wednesday’s meeting, the Fairbury City Council:

-Paid ArchiveSocial $2,388 for FOIA purposes of the city’s social network accounts for the next year.

-Authorized the purchase of a skid loader bucket.

-Adopted an ordinance amending Chapter 5, Section A relating to liens.
