Visitors to Kilgus Farmstead near Fairbury were able to enjoy a breakfast on the farm for only a dollar Saturday morning.
The annual Livingston County Farm Bureau Young Leader event shows members of the public the approximate amount of money farmers make for raising the ingredients involved in a breakfast of scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, milk, coffee and orange juice.
“When you go to the grocery store and you buy all of these ingredients and everything, the farmer doesn’t get all that money,” explained Young Leader chair Sarah Hoerner. “A dollar is about what they get out of that meal – it’s actually about 84 or 85 cents.”
Aside from enjoying a hearty breakfast, visitors to the farm viewed ag displays, toured Kilgus Dairy and chatted with local farmers on a breezy but pleasant June morning.
“It’s just a great day to get people out to the farm, not only to enjoy a good breakfast, but to let them see the price the farmer receives,” said Matt Kilgus.
The Young Leaders group is made up of young adults with a connection to agriculture. They hold various events and programs throughout the year to promote the industry in the community.
Various speakers address the monthly meetings and the group welcomes new members with an interest in agriculture who are looking to give back to their communities.
